The History of Fat Panda

From Holland to the River Thames.

Fat Panda began life in the 1960’s as a Dutch barge, originally built for working life on the waterways of the Netherlands. Solidly constructed, she was designed for strength, durability, and years of service.

Her First Chapter – Houd ’Um

For many years the barge was known as Houd ’Um, a Dutch name that reflected her origins and character. She went on to serve as a liveaboard home, providing a practical and dependable space for life on the water.

A New Name, A New Chapter

In 2021, the barge was purchased and renamed Fat Panda, marking a fresh stage in her journey. In 2025, she entered a new chapter, with plans to reconfigure her from a lived-in barge into a unique riverside stay, a place where guests can enjoy the heritage of a Dutch vessel with the comfort of modern living.

At Home in Thames & Kennet Marina

Now moored at Thames & Kennet Marina in Reading, Fat Panda is part of a vibrant boating community on the River Thames. Here, her story continues: offering guests the chance to slow down, connect with the river, and experience life aboard a traditional Dutch barge.
